Collapse of an Unauthorized Gold Mining Site in Mali

At least 48 people were killed in the collapse of an unauthorized site for gold mining in western Mali, raising concerns about the safety of workers and the absence of regulation.

In the western part of Mali, an illegal gold-mining shaft collapse resulted in the death of at least 48 people. This information was provided by several local sources to the France-Presse agency.

One of the regional governors confirmed the incident, noting that rescuers continue search and rescue operations at the site of the collapse. According to him, the number of victims may increase, as most of the trapped have been under the rubble.

Witnesses reported that at the time of the collapse, there was a significant number of people engaged in illegal gold mining. It should be noted that similar incidents are not uncommon in the region due to a lack of safety regulations in such operations.

"We are working to find those who survived and remain trapped. Work continues around the clock," said one of the rescuers.
